Glencoe

Glencoe residents, drawn by their village's small town atmosphere, like to think of it as "the heart of the North shore," both for its geographic location and its warm, inviting character. They say that their larger North Shore neighbors comprise many neighborhoods while Glencoe is only one neighborhood.

Step off the train and stroll along Park Avenue and Vernon Avenue in downtown Glencoe. Everyone seems to know everyone else seated at the sidewalk cafes and benches – and if they're newcomers they're busy being introduced to longer-term residents. Local shops and restaurants are eerily reminiscent of Cheers, "where everyone knows your name."

City services, park district

The Glencoe Park District offers a range of parks, facilities, events and programs unusual for a small village. Winter favorites hockey and figure skating at the Watts Ice Center and a Midwestern rarity – a sledding hill. In the summer residents navigate the steep bluffs and winding paths down to the broad, sandy Glencoe Beach for swimming, picnicking, sailing, kayaking and relaxing.

Glencoe is home to the internationally-known Chicago Botanic Garden. The Skokie Lagoons, a pastoral paradise that borders Glencoe to the west, boasts leisurely biking trails, sailing and canoeing, and some of the best fishing in Illinois.

Adding to Glencoe's park-like ambience are three 18-hole golf courses: the public Glencoe Golf Club, the Skokie Country Club and the Lakeshore Country Club.

The Village of Glencoe provides a full range of municipal services. Professionals in the Public Safety Department are cross-trained as police officers and firefighters or paramedics.

Housing stock

Many of the grand estates in Glencoe have been subdivided into leafy home sites, but there are still many lakefront mansions with a wealth of history associated with them

Glencoe has a rich architectural heritage, including a number of Frank Lloyd Wright homes and Ravine Bluffs, a subdivision with a Wright-designed bridge, entrance sculptures and homes. Many prominent local architects, including mid-century modernists, have designed homes in Glencoe.

Glencoe homes start below $500,000 and range well into the millions, spanning a variety of styles from traditional to strikingly modern. The village also has a modest number of condominiums, townhomes and rental apartments.

Transportation

Metra's Union Pacific North Line reaches downtown Chicago about 45 minutes after leaving its downtown Glencoe stop.  Residents in the southern part of Glencoe are a short distance from the Hubbard Woods station in neighboring Winnetka.

Most of the homes in Glencoe are within walking distance of a train stop, and no home is more than two miles from the Edens Expressway and a half-hour (in light traffic) drive to downtown Chicago.

The Pace bus system has a single route serving Glencoe.

Shopping, dining, nightlife

Glencoe's compact, charming downtown, adjacent to the train station, is a true village center and meeting place.

Locally-owned boutiques, gourmet groceries, restaurants, outdoor seating, wide sidewalks, live theater and vest-pocket parks contribute to a lively scene.

Parkway Drugs is a Glencoe institution that's as much genteel general store as full-service pharmacy. The charming Hubbard Woods shops and restaurants are a few steps away in neighboring Winnetka.

Nearby upscale malls, including Old Orchard, Northbrook Court and the Spanish-style Plaza del Lago, afford easy access to the accoutrements of an affluent lifestyle.

Schools

Public school students in Glencoe District 35 attend outstanding, child-centric schools in picturesque environments, building friendships as they progress from South (K-2) to West (3-4) to Central School (5-8).
